Who Needs to Renew (vs. Apply New)
You need renewal, not a new application, if you already hold a Pakistani passport that is expiring soon or has already expired — the process reuses your existing passport record rather than establishing a brand-new one. If you've never held a Pakistani passport before, or you're applying for a minor's first passport, that's a new application with a slightly different document set; renewal specifically applies when you have an existing MRP or e-Passport to replace.
It's worth renewing before expiry rather than after: many countries require six months or more of remaining validity for entry, so a passport that's technically "not expired yet" can still get you denied boarding or entry if it's close to its expiry date.
Step-by-Step Renewal Process
- Book a POS (Passport Online System) token — this reserves your slot for the in-person biometric visit and is normally done online before you go to the office.
- Gather your documents — original CNIC/Smart Card, your existing (expiring or expired) passport, and any supporting documents if your name or other details have changed since your last passport.
- Visit the Regional Passport Office on your booked slot for photo capture and biometric verification (fingerprints from both thumbs and index fingers).
- Data entry and verification — your renewal application is checked against your CNIC record and DGIP's Exit Control List / background checks.
- Pay the applicable fee at the counter via QR code, EasyPaisa, or JazzCash, based on the service tier and passport type you selected.
- Track your application using the token number from your visit, and collect your renewed passport once status shows Ready for Collection or Dispatched.
Documents Required for Renewal
Original CNIC / Smart Card
Your current, valid national identity card — this is the primary document DGIP verifies your renewal application against.
Existing passport
Your current or most recently expired Pakistani passport, submitted as part of the renewal record.
Proof of changes
Supporting documents if your name, marital status, or other recorded details have changed since your last passport was issued.

Fees depend on passport type (standard MRP vs. e-Passport), validity (5 or 10 years), page count, and service tier (Normal or Urgent). These figures are directional — verify the current schedule at DGIP before paying:

Renewing From Outside Pakistan
Overseas Pakistanis can also renew, but through a different channel — either a Pakistani mission/consulate abroad or, where available, DGIP's online e-Services renewal portal, rather than an inland Regional Passport Office.
